Ready to start planning your dream photoshoot in Italy?
The Amalfi Coast is a destination that stirs the soul—vibrant villages clinging to dramatic cliffs, lemon-scented air drifting through cobblestone alleys, and the Mediterranean Sea glistening in the sun. If you’re dreaming of an Amalfi Coast photoshoot, whether it’s for a couple’s session, engagement, elopement, honeymoon, or even a fashion editorial, this guide will help you plan it flawlessly.
From choosing locations to crafting an itinerary, figuring out what to wear, and where to relax afterward, here’s everything you need to know.
All about the Amalfi Coast: where it is, what it holds, and why it’s special
The Amalfi Coast, a stunning stretch of coastline in southern Italy’s Campania region, is a dream destination for photographers seeking dramatic landscapes, pastel-hued villages, and the timeless allure of the Mediterranean.
During the 10th–11th centuries, the Duchy of Amalfi existed on the territory of the Amalfi Coast, centred in the town of Amalfi. This is why the area is known as the Amalfi Coast, even though Amalfi is only one of the many coastal towns.
Spanning about 50 kilometers along the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula, it includes iconic towns like Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Praiano, and Atrani, each offering its own unique charm. From Positano’s cascading cliffside buildings and pebbled beaches to Ravello’s panoramic villas and lush gardens perched high above the sea, the Amalfi Coast is rich with photogenic vistas.
What makes this area truly unique is its combination of rugged natural beauty and centuries-old human craftsmanship—vertical towns seemingly carved into cliffs, ancient churches nestled in narrow alleyways, and vibrant bougainvillea draping over hand-painted ceramic storefronts.
The landscape is both wild and cultivated, with terraced lemon groves and vineyards framing views of the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea. Whether capturing the golden hour in Amalfi’s historic town center, the tranquil romance of Villa Cimbrone’s gardens, or the colorful fishing boats in Marina di Praia, every corner of the Amalfi Coast offers a visual story waiting to be told.

Why the Amalfi Coast Is Perfect for a Photoshoot
The Amalfi Coast is a photographer’s paradise for many reasons. It effortlessly combines natural beauty, architectural elegance, and a timeless Mediterranean atmosphere.
Its steep cliffs and winding coastal roads create dramatic elevation changes, offering sweeping sea views and layered backdrops ideal for both portraits and landscapes. In just a few miles, you get colorful villages (Positano, Atrani), dramatic cliffs (Ravello), quiet beaches (Praiano), lush gardens, and even sea caves.
It’s not just about the visuals—there’s an unmistakable romantic energy and elegance, making it perfect for couples’ portraits.
Then there is the iconic Italian charm. Every town is filled with pastel-colored buildings, vibrant tiled domes, rustic stone staircases, and bougainvillea-draped balconies, creating an organic yet cinematic setting. Photographers are spoiled for choice: golden hour light bathes the coastline in a warm, romantic glow, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun filters through the mountains. The way the sun hits the cliffs and sea creates naturally flattering lighting, especially during sunset.
Beyond the iconic vistas, there are charming details at every turn—colorful fishing boats bobbing in tiny harbors, hand-painted ceramics displayed on shopfronts, lemon groves and gardens in bloom, and historic piazzas full of character.
The varied textures and colors—from deep blue waters to sandy hues of the cliffs and lively village façades—offer a dynamic palette for any style of photography, whether fashion, lifestyle, engagement, elopement, or travel editorial. Add to that the region’s sense of timelessness and the luxurious-yet-relaxed vibe, and it’s easy to see why the Amalfi Coast stands out as one of the most photogenic and enchanting destinations in the world.

Amalfi Coast Photoshoot Itineraries
Whether you have just one hour or a full day, there’s an itinerary to fit your vision. Even though Capri is not technically on the Amalfi Coast, it is close enough to be included. As a photographer on the Amalfi Coast I usually offer a service that starts at 2 hours, and can include multiple days and multiple locations. I only offer 1 hour photoshoots at specific times of the year, inquire to learn more.
1-Hour Photoshoot
Best for: Quick couple portraits, honeymoon snapshots, family portraits with kids.
Recommended if you’re staying in one town and want to capture a single iconic setting, best suited to sunrise or sunset, and one central location.
Planning a 1-hour photoshoot on the Amalfi Coast means making the most of iconic backdrops and golden lighting—each town offering something uniquely picturesque. You choose one place, and explore it, taking the time to find the best poses and best angles in a limited space and time frame.
In Positano, we can start at the iconic Spiaggia Grande, where the colorful cliffside houses cascade toward the beach. We can shoot from the water’s edge facing the town for a postcard-perfect backdrop, or climb the narrow steps to Via Cristoforo Colombo for a higher vantage point with sweeping views and charming storefronts.
In Ravello, a charming village with winding car-free streets and pretty terraced gardens, we walk around and enjoy. Another possibility is to head straight to Villa Cimbrone’s Terrace of Infinity—a stone balustrade lined with statues that overlooks endless blue sea and sky. The surrounding gardens are equally romantic, with ivy-covered arches, shaded paths, and panoramic nooks ideal for portraits. An important note: Villa Cimbrone now charges 1800 € + taxes for a photoshoot, so you have to consider what your budget is, and I’ll take care of the booking process.
Amalfi offers a mix of historic and coastal charm: we can begin in Piazza del Duomo, capturing the grand staircase and striped facade of the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, then move toward the harborfront for shots with moored boats and the town rising behind.
For one hour in Capri, focus your hour in Giardini di Augusto, with lush terraces and panoramic views of the Faraglioni rock formations, or take a few quick shots in the chic Piazzetta, framed by classic white buildings and vibrant island life.
Whether you’re after cliffside glamour, old-world romance, or sun-drenched simplicity, each of these locations can deliver a stunning one-hour shoot that feels like a full editorial spread.
Itinerary Suggestions:
- Positano:
– Spiaggia Grande at sunrise for classic beach shots with the village in the background.
– Via Cristoforo Colombo for dramatic cliffside panoramas.
– Hotel Le Sirenuse terrace (if staying or booked) for luxury vibes. - Ravello:
– Villa Cimbrone – Terrace of Infinity, a romantic and elegant setting with breathtaking views.
– Wandering the serene stone alleys for old-world charm. - Amalfi:
– Duomo di Amalfi, with its dramatic staircase.
– Port of Amalfi for colorful boats and water views. - Capri
– Giardini di Augusto: Faraglioni views, lush gardens
– La Piazzetta + Via Krupp: Stylish shops, cobblestone charm, scenic cliff paths
2-Hour Photoshoot
Best for: Engagements, surprise marriage proposals, styled couples sessions, or combining two nearby locations.
Recommended if you’re staying in one town and want to capture more than one setting, best suited to sunrise or sunset.
If you have a full two hours for a photoshoot on the Amalfi Coast, you can capture a wide variety of settings within each town—balancing iconic landmarks, hidden gems, and different lighting conditions for a rich, storytelling-style session. Or you can combine two locations with the comfort of a taxi ride between them (I don’t recommend using your own car, if you rented one, because parking in this area is extremely difficult), or, even better, a private boat ride.
In Positano, start at Spiaggia Grande for classic beach shots with the colorful stacked houses rising behind. Then, take the steps up to Via Cristoforo Colombo and Le Sirenuse’s terrace area (even just nearby public spaces) for sweeping views and elegant, elevated framing. The side streets like Viale Pasitea offer quiet corners with flower-covered doorways and rustic textures perfect for lifestyle or fashion shots.
In Ravello, begin at Villa Rufolo with its Moorish arches and lush gardens, then move to Villa Cimbrone’s Terrace of Infinity (a note: taking professional pictures there is not allowed unless you pay a photography fee, contact me to learn more) —you’ll have time to explore its sprawling grounds, stone pathways, and secluded viewpoints. If you want to take pictures in Ravello another option is Villa Rufolo: beautiful view at a much lower price. Don’t skip the charming cobblestone lanes near Piazza Duomo, which glow beautifully during the soft light of morning or pre-sunset.
For Amalfi, a two-hour shoot allows you to cover both historic and coastal vibes: start at Piazza del Duomo, then wander into the nearby Arsenale Museum courtyard for atmospheric arches and stone textures. Follow the Via Lorenzo d’Amalfi alleyways down toward the Marina Grande for shots with boats, sea views, and vibrant street life.
On the island of Capri, a two-hour session lets you shoot at Giardini di Augusto with the Faraglioni in view, then take a short walk through Via Krupp or explore the glamorous vibe of La Piazzetta. If time allows, add a quick stop at the Belvedere of Punta Tragara for an elevated angle over the cliffs and sea. Every one of these towns offers a blend of architectural beauty, sea-meets-sky panoramas, and intimate, cinematic corners that make a two-hour photoshoot feel like a full-day visual journey.
When you have 2 hours, all of these locations can be the starting point for a sunset boat ride, which is an amazing option for a surprise proposal, for example. Most of these villages can be combined in a photosession and boat tour – preferably two locations in total. You won’t be able to see it all, but you’ll have great views from the boat and a few snaps of the towns.
For a more comprehensive photoshoot along the whole Amalfi Coast, I can recommend a custom photoshoot, from 3 to 8 hours, depending on how many locations and activities you’d like to include.

What to Wear for an Amalfi Coast Photoshoot
When planning what to wear for a photoshoot on the Amalfi Coast, think effortlessly elegant, airy, and timeless to complement the stunning coastal scenery. For women, flowy dresses in soft neutrals, pastels, or warm tones like terracotta, blush, or mustard photograph beautifully against the Mediterranean blues and sun-washed architecture. Light fabrics such as linen, cotton, or chiffon catch the breeze perfectly and add natural movement to your photos.
Men can opt for linen shirts, light chinos or tailored shorts, and loafers or espadrilles for a relaxed but polished look. Avoid loud logos or overly busy patterns, as they can clash with the dreamy, natural backdrops. Earthy textures and coordinated outfits work especially well for families—think layers in beige, white, olive, or soft blues that harmonize without being too matchy. Don’t forget sunglasses, a sunhat, or a chic scarf for stylish candids, and always wear comfortable shoes if we’re walking through cobbled streets or cliffside paths. Ultimately, your outfit should reflect your personality while embracing the romantic and relaxed spirit of the Amalfi Coast.
Pro Tips:
- Avoid bold prints that compete with scenic backgrounds
- Pack wrinkle-resistant options
- Bring backup outfits in case of wind or sea spray
