I want to make sure that your photos are not just pictures, but timeless memories captured with care and attention to detail.

Why Venice is a Dream Destination for Photographs

        Unique Architecture and Canals

The beauty of Venice lies in its unique combination of architecture, canals, and picturesque streets. As you stroll through the Piazza San Marco or cross one of the many bridges, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world. The iconic Rialto Bridge offers a stunning backdrop for couples to snap a memorable photo, while the charming canals provide the perfect place to capture family moments with gondolas in the background. Venice is not just a city; it’s a living canvas with picturesque angles at every turn.

Venice’s beauty makes it perfect for family portraits, romantic photoshoots, or even solo selfies with breathtaking views. The architecture is especially photogenic – grand, classical buildings lined along the canals, their colorful facades reflected in the water. It’s easy to capture a picture-perfect moment no matter where you are.

Sunrise Glow and Golden Hour Magic on the Lagoon

Sunrise and golden hour in Venice are simply magical. As the sun rises and sets over the lagoon, the soft light bathes the city, making it look even more enchanting. Whether you’re capturing a couple’s portrait on the Accademia Bridge or a family photo by the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, the sunset over the lagoon creates a dreamy atmosphere that will make your photos shine. The vibrant colors of the Venetian sky and the peaceful reflections in the water create stunning images.

For solo travelers, these two special moments of the day offer a quiet and peaceful moment to reflect and capture the tranquility of the city. It’s a perfect time to find a scenic corner along the canals and take a photo that will remind you of this serene, magical moment.

A City Without Cars – Endless Compositions

One of the most charming things about Venice is that it’s a city without cars. This not only gives the city a calm, timeless atmosphere, but it also makes for fantastic photo opportunities. As a couple, you can take romantic photos while walking hand-in-hand through narrow alleys or riding in a gondola down the Grand Canal. The absence of cars creates a sense of peace that enhances the experience, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the beauty of the surroundings.

For families, the absence of traffic means safety and less stress, which is perfect when you’re trying to get that ideal family photo in front of a Venice landmark. You’ll have plenty of time to stop, smile, and pose in front of the city’s most beautiful views, from the Rialto Bridge to the colorful houses of Burano Island.

Getting to know the city: an introduction to Venice’s neighborhoods

The best places to take photos in Venice depend on your taste and your personal take on a city that is small but feels like an endless mystery.

Venice has a long and intricated history, and each person visiting can focus on different aspects and itineraries. Wandering down the alleys, you’ll discover that there’s a different side to Venice tucked away in each of the island’s neighbourhoods.

There are six main neighborhoods in Venice, called sestieri. Each of them has a distinctive personality. As a photographer in Venice, I love to learn more about you and your story – what brings you here and what you love. Once I know about you and your preferences, it is easier for me to recommend a neighborhood for our photoshoot in Venice. Here is a list of them and the main reasons to choose each.

Best locations for photography in Sestiere San Marco Venice

The starting point for most of my photoshoots in Venice is Piazza San Marco. First of all because it is the easiest spot to reach for most of my clients- nobody gets lost! We can meet at the base of the bell tower, or close to Café Florian, right in the center of St. Mark’s Square in front of the Basilica. This position offers an amazing view of the square and its famous landmarks like the Doge’s Palace.

Café Florian was founded in 1720 and used to be a meeting point for Venetian writers, poets and artists. Today it still serves as a meeting place for locals and tourists alike. It is a great spot for photographs, because of the refined golden interiors and the view – if you decide to sit outside.

Piazza San Marco offers a lot of spots that look amazing as a background for pictures, hidden in plain sight. A richly decorated marble bench close to the exit of Palazzo Ducale, and the door- a piece of art that you can only photograph when the museum is closed. The iconic line of gondolas with San Giorgio Maggiore Island in the background, on Riva degli Schiavoni. The Brige of Sighs, that can be photographed in three very different ways. Then there is Palazzo Ducale, the Doge’s Palace, with all of its incredible architectural details. We could easily use one hour or more just in this small area.

Best Locations in Sestiere San Marco:

        • Piazza San Marco
        • Café Florian
        • Riva degli Schiavoni with the gondolas in the background
        • Bridge of Sighs
        • Canonica Bridge
        • Porticos of Palazzo Ducale

Best for: First-time visitors, couples wanting iconic landmarks, lovers of grand architecture
Vibe of the Neighborhood: Grand, monumental, elegant, historic, very touristy

Best locations for photography in Sestiere Cannaregio Venice

Cannaregio is Venice at its most real. This is where most Venetians live, work, enjoy life. The neighborhood sits in the northwest part of the city, starting from the train station and going into the shopping street Strada Nova and the city’s Jewish ghetto. Cannareggio is great for anyone looking for the Venetian nightlife, in Fondamenta dei Ormesini and Fondamenta della Misericordia.

This is not the only reason to visit, though. The area is just magical when it comes to planning a photoshoot in Venice. This is the right sestiere for anyone looking for a photoshoot that exhudes local vibes: narrow streets, very few tourists, a lot of bars, and quite a few magical views for your photos. The beautiful canals and bridges glow at sunrise and sunset, and you rarely find any tourist here.

        Best Locations in Sestiere Cannaregio:

        • Strada Nova
        • Fondamenta dei Ormesini
        • Fondamenta della Misericordia
        • Jewish ghetto
        • Ponte Chiodo

Best for: Food lovers, people who want to see and photograph a more residential, hidden Venice, beautiful canals and bridge views
Vibe of the Neighborhood: local, colorful, lively, working class Venicei — great for getting a feel of “real” Venetian life while still being central.

Best locations for photography in Sestiere Dorsoduro Venice

Dorsoduro includes some of the most interesting spots in Venice. When you book a longer photoshoot, or if you decide to include a taxi ride, we can easily have a photoshoot between San Marco and Dorsoduro. When it comes to experiencing the city life, Campo Santa Margherita is a charming little square and the best place for breakfast, aperitivo, and anything in between. Close to Venice’s University, it is packed with students, but very few tourists.

As a photographer in Venice, I love the artistic vibe of the Dorsoduro neighborhood. Gallerie dell’Accademia, Galleria di Palazzo Cini, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana are connected in the Dorsoduro Museum Mile, a unique cultural itinerary along eight centuries of art. Accademia is both a museum and the name of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. Around the Accademia Museum you have the iconic Accademia bridge and that magical view over La Salute Church. Dorsoduro is a magnet for art lovers, students and creatives who choose to live here.

        Best Locations in Sestiere Dorsoduro:

        • Ponte dell’Accademia
        • Campo Santa Margherita
        • Fondamenta delle Zattere
        • Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
        • Punta della Dogana

Best for: art lovers, couples looking for quiet romantic walks, those wanting a more laid-back vibe, unique and iconic views such as the view from the Accademia bridge and Basilica della Salute
Vibe of the Neighborhood: artistic, intellectual, scenic, eclectic, charming Venice

Best locations for photography in Sestiere San Polo Venice

The smallest sestiere in Venice is also the oldest in the city: San Polo. The area is home to the biggest market in Venice, the famous Rialto Market. It is also a great place for cicchetti, and great restaurants. The area is full of stunning spots for photographs. Its proximity with San Marco makes it easy to include it in a photoshoot in Venice.

The neighborhood’s namesake, Campo San Polo, is the second-largest square in Venice after San Marco and is full of bars and restaurants. This neighborhood is unpretentious, and full of great surprises. Chiesa dei Frari is stunning and the area around is filled with picturesque cafés and gelaterie.

Best Locations in Sestiere San Polo:

        • Rialto Bridge
        • Rialto Market

Best for: food lovers, people who want a mix of hidden gems and very iconic views such as Rialto, market lovers, early-morning shoots, people wanting classic views of the Grand Canal
Vibe of the Neighborhood: heart of the city, bustling and colorful, lively, very busy all day long

Best locations for photography in Sestiere Santa Croce Venice

Santa Croce is a lovely neighborhood that includes Campo San Giacomo – one of my favorite locations in Venice- and a lot of little spots perfect for a very quintessentially Venetian photoshoot. The area is also home to some great museums such as Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art, the Oriental Art Museum, the Natural History Museum and Fondazione Prada. This is one of the areas tourist know less, and it is very relaxing to walk around and enjoy a book under the trees in one of the small squares of the neighborhood.

Best Locations in Sestiere San Polo:

        • Campo San Giacomo
        • Ponte degli Scalzi
        • Ponte San Boldo

Best for: Travelers arriving by foot/train, those wanting convenience and fewer tourists
Vibe of the Neighborhood: Quiet and residential with some industrial touches — not the most photogenic, but great for a break from the crowds and easy access

        Venice-Italy-Photoshoot-Camilla-M-Photographer

Best locations for photography in Sestiere Castello Venice Arsenale, Art and Architecture Biennale

Castello is right behind San Marco and it feels like a world apart. The area includes the magnificent Arsenale, a location that is just perfect for a photoshoot. Not far there is the Venice Art and Architecture Biennale, a magical location for a photoshoot in Venice Italy, as well.

A walk through this neighbourhood is festooned with colourful, freshly laundered washing hanging out across the canals and alleys, scented with wafts of fresh pastries from small bakeries.

        Best Locations in Sestiere Castello:

        • Fondamenta de l’Osmarin
        • Chiesa di San Giorgio dei Greci
        • San Francesco della Vigna
        • Arsenale
        • Giardini della Biennale
        • Via Garibaldi
        • Ponte del Diavolo

Best for: Adventurous travelers, people who love getting off the beaten path
Vibe of the Neighborhood: Local and authentic — from charming backstreets to the peaceful waterfront of Via Garibaldi. Ideal for more candid, natural photos.

Best locations for photography in the Islands: Giudecca, San Giorgio Maggiore Island, Murano and Burano

Each island of Venice has a unique personality. Murano is the island of glass making and it has a more industrial, yet colorful feel. Burano is the pastels island, because of the color of its houses, and it is extremely remote yet absolutely magical to visit. San Giorgio Maggiore is in front of San Marco, a short waterbus ride away and it gives you the best view over the square. Giudecca is a lively island, full of exceptional hotels such as Belmond Hotel Cipriani and Molino Stucky Hilton.

        Burano

Best for: Families, creative souls, solo travelers, and anyone who loves vibrant, colorful backdrops
Vibe: Cheerful, playful, and full of life — a photographer’s dream with its rainbow-painted houses, sleepy canals, and charming island energy. Feels like stepping into a fairy tale.

        Murano

Best for: Art lovers, craft and design enthusiasts, couples seeking something quieter
Vibe: Refined and traditional — known for its centuries-old glassmaking heritage. Think artisan boutiques, calm canals, and fewer crowds. Ideal for a quieter, more cultured shoot.

        San Giorgio Maggiore

Best for: Couples and solo travelers looking for dramatic, postcard-perfect views of Venice
Vibe: Serene and majestic — this small island feels almost private, with wide open spaces and stunning panoramas of Venice across the lagoon. The view from the bell tower is one of the best in the city.

        Giudecca

Best for: Stylish travelers, couples seeking a more contemporary, peaceful backdrop
Vibe: Quiet, artsy, and a bit edgy — with a mix of traditional charm and modern culture. Home to luxury hotels and local studios, it’s a great place for golden hour portraits with a view of Venice’s skyline.
