Ioanna and Thodoris planned a beautiful intimate wedding with close friends and family in Venice. The stunning church of San Giorgio dei Greci is located in Castello, one of the neighborhoods of Venice, not far from Piazza San Marco. It was the center of the Scuola dei Greci, the Confraternity of the Greeks in Venice.
The History of San Giorgio dei Greci and the Greek community in Venice
For centuries, despite the close ties of Venice to the Byzantine world (Venice has been part of the Byzantine Empire), the Greek Orthodox rite was not permitted in Venice. In 1498, the Greek community in Venice gained the right to found the Scuola de San Nicolò dei Greci, a confraternity which aided members of that community. In 1539, after protracted negotiations, the papacy allowed the construction of the church of San Giorgio.
It is interesting to know that the Greek community in Venice dates back to the Middle Ages, when the Republic of Venice was still formally part of the Byzantine Empire. Settled mostly in the sestiere of Castello, it reached its height in the centuries after the Fall of Constantinople, when many Greeks, including merchants, soldiers, and scholars, fled the Ottoman conquest. Today many couples from Greece celebrate their wedding in Venice thanks to the presence of this stunning Orthodox Church.
Getting to the church with a gondola ride on a beautiful sunny day
Ioanna wanted to reach the church via gondola and she had the luckiest of days because the sun was shining, despite being in November. November in Venice is known for mist and rain, but this day was special. Thodoris was waiting for her at the entrance of the church, together with their family and closest friends traveling all the way from Greece.
