Winter Elopement in Venice in the midst of Carnival
An intimate wedding in Venice on a sunny winter day
Why organize an intimate and symbolic wedding in Venice
An elopement can be a real or symbolic way to say I do, in a city that holds a special meaning to you. Giorgia and Alessandro chose Venice to take pictures and privately celebrate their wedding.
There are a thousand reasons to choose an intimate wedding. The desire to focus on the essence – that is, on your love story – rather than on social conventions. The desire to get married in a different and distant place, without having to organize a huge trip. The choice to get married immediately, despite the reduced budget does not allow to invite all the family and friends.
An intimate wedding can also be called an elopement or micro-wedding
I’ve written a lot about the elopement and why it can make you happy. With Covid, a new term has also spread: micro-wedding. Micro-weddings or elopements are improperly viewed as a last minute wedding that requires little planning.
The truth is that a small wedding, like one with 200 guests, to be really beautiful, exciting and unforgettable, still requires planning. It’s worth reflecting on why to do it and how best to do it.
As a photographer specialized in intimate weddings and elopements in Venice and in Italy, you can contact me for help in planning this kind of symbolic and meaningful events. One of the main reasons to choose an elopement is to have the ability to create your perfect day without worrying about other people’s expectations and requests.
Getting married in February in Venice can be a bold and winning choice
The month of February is a very lively time in Venice. Carnival month par excellence, a cold month, but also a very sunny month. February can be, unexpectedly, one of the best months for a photo shoot and an intimate wedding in Venice.
February is the month of Carnival, frittelle and parties, but also Valentine’s Day
The month of February in Venice is the month of Carnival. Celebrating Carnival means eating frittelle, partying, treating yourself to an extra spritz. The word Carnival comes from the Latin ‘eliminate meat’, referring to the day after the revelry of Shrove Tuesday, the beginning of Lent with abstinence and fasting. Its origins are very ancient: the first testimony dates back to a document of the Doge Vitale Falier of 1094.
Celebrating Valentine’s Day in Venice is always a good idea
February in Venice is also time for Valentine’s Day, a holiday felt and celebrated all over the world. Every year, thousands of tourists organize wedding proposals on the gondola and romantic trips to Venice for their loved ones. The Venetians are no different. Giorgia and Alessandro have chosen Valentine’s Day for an engagement photoshoot, and the day after for their intimate wedding.
Where to take intimate and romantic photos in the midst of the Venice Carnival
Booking a photographer who knows Venice is essential for an event like your wedding
On such a hectic day, with Piazza San Marco full of children and tourists celebrating the Carnival, taking romantic photos can be a feat. After talking to Giorgia and Alessandro we decided to set our photo shoot in Piazza San Marco for a few iconic shots with Basilica di San Marco in the background, and then move to the Arsenale area.
The Castello district and the imposing Arsenale of Venice
The Castello sestiere borders on Piazza San Marco, but is far from Piazzale Roma. For this reason, even in the midst of the Venice Carnival, it is rarely a crowded area. It is one of the greenest areas of Venice counting the Giardini and the Island of Sant’Elena.
The Castello district is famous, among other things, for being the site of the imposing Arsenale, the hub of the naval industry of the Republic of Venice and today the home of the Italian Navy. At its entrance there are four majestic stone lions, which according to the legend, in November 1719, during a stormy night, came to life and tore apart several people, so as to lead the inhabitants of the Serenissima to believe that the place was bewitched.
Despite the creepy stories, this part of Venice is perfect for romantic photos
The impressive architecture, the statues, the canals – it all contributes to creating elegant, unexpected, creative photos. This area is a few steps from Piazza San Marco, and is very busy during the period in which the Biennale of Art and Architecture opens, but in February it is a place of incredible peace.
