Maternity photoshoot in Venice with a magical gondola ride on the wavy Giudecca canal. Overlooking the most iconic landmarks in Venice: Piazza San Marco, the Bridge of Sighs, San Giorgio Maggiore Island. Samantha and Leonel are a gorgeous couple from Nice in France, traveling to Venice to celebrate their growing family with a maternity photoshoot in Venice.

Samantha contacted me last minute for a photo session in Venice. she told me she was about six months pregnant and she wanted to mark the occasion with photographs from Venice. She and Leonel were also planning their wedding in Madeira, his home island, for the following year. So this occasion was a mix of a pregnancy photoshoot, a pre-wedding and a treat to themselves as a busy couple soon to be even more busy.

We met at their hotel because as their first time in Venice I wanted them to feel cuddled and avoid them getting lost while trying to find the meeting point, especially since Samantha was about six months pregnant. This October sunrise in Venice did not disappoint: the air was chilly and the sunshine strong, creating a magical chiaroscuro.

We took photos in Piazza San Marco, close to Biblioteca Marciana and Piazzetta San Marco. I photographed them on the bridge overlooking the Bridge of Sighs, a classic and absolutely timeless location. The wind created a magical effect and their intimacy was so easy to capture on camera.

A sunrise gondola ride in Venice for the expecting couple

In Piazza San Marco we decided to hop on a gondola for a gondola ride on the Giudecca Canal, overlooking the Piazza. The canal is deep and full of waves, but it also gives you one of the best views over Venice. On one side you have Piazza San Marco and Palazzo Ducale, on the other the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and in the distance you can see Punta della Dogana, where one of the most beautiful contemporary art collection in Venice resides, the Pinault Collection. It was the best possible morning to present Venice to this lovely couple.
